Lizzy Onuselogu
Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year. My name is Ms. Lizzy (rm. 118) and I am excited to be your child’s teacher during this school year. As you may already know, third grade is a benchmark grade. This means that promotion to 4th grade will be based upon standardized test scores as well as classroom grades. This is very important because we will begin working towards that goal.

This year, I am excited to inform you that I will continue to integrate technology into my curriculum. This means that your child will be experiencing some wonderful new things through various technology explorations. Assignments will also be assigned using www.myskillstutor.com and students will be using their passwords to access assignments. Please, allow your child to extend activities at home through computer. You can also visit my classroom blog at www.lnonuselogu.cuipblogs.net.

BEHAVIOR

Please speak with your child regarding his/her behavior during classes. Misconduct will not be tolerated. Instructional time is valuable; therefore I will not spend the bulk of my day dealing with discipline issues. I will use my time effectively to teach your child. If discipline issues arise which cannot be corrected in class, I will request a conference with you. All repeated misconduct is documented. The Chicago Public School Uniform Discipline Code is forthcoming and please familiarize yourself with it, as it will be strictly enforced.

HOMEWORK

Homework will be an integral part of your child’s grade. The Chicago Public Schools’ homework policy will be followed. Students will be given a weekly homework assignment sheet at the beginning of each week. Please help your child to keep up with it, as students will only receive one copy. If it is lost, it will be the child’s responsibility to copy homework assignments. Weekly homework will also be posted on our website, www.dunnetech.org.

TEXTBOOKS

Each student will be issued textbooks for his/her use. Please be reminded that all books are property of Chicago Public Schools and must be cared for properly. Parents will be required to pay for any lost or destroyed textbooks before another will be issued. No student will be excused from homework assignments because of lost books and a “zero” grade will be given when homework assignments are not turned in.

CONFERENCES

It is in the best interest of your child that we keep open lines of communication this year. If you have questions or concerns about your child’s progress, feel free to schedule a conference with me. Please do not “catch” me during class to have an impromptu meeting. Understand that I will not be able to accurately inform you if I am preoccupied with students. I will be more than happy to meet with you. Conferences are scheduled for Monday-Friday at 8:30am or by special appointment. Conferences will not be held on Wednesdays due to our faculty/grade-level team meetings.

CLASSROOM VISITS

While I welcome you to visit my classroom to observe your child or see what we’re learning, all classroom visits must be cleared by the Main Office. Stop by the office for a visitor’s pass. However, I will not be able to conduct a conference with you at that time. I will be busy preparing your child to meet the mandated state goals for promotion. Note that the reading period (9:00am-11-00am) is uninterrupted time.

BOOK REPORTS

It is a CPS mandate that every student complete at least 25 book reports for the year. This is a part of the reading curriculum. My goal is at least 35 book reports from each third grader. You may begin working on them as soon as possible. The required format will be distributed. Encouraging your child to read everyday is very important in improving his/her comprehension skills.

PROJECTS

Projects will be assigned on an ongoing basis in conjunction with our units of study. These projects allow you to serve as a guide for your child. Projects are expected to be turned in by the due dates and will serve as the basis for a research grade. Projects should also be the work of the student. I am your partner this year. We share the common goal of ensuring the best possible educational experience for your child. I look forward to meeting and working with each of you. If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Ms. Lizzy, Room,118
